Pillies Be Free!

When my son was a toddler, he was fascinated with 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. In the most darling of ways, he insisted that the star of the book was called 'Pillie.' Of course when I bring this up now, that boy doesn't recall this and looks at me as if I am a lunatic for even suggesting he could ever be so baby-ish. Ahhh, disaffected youth...

Today my now first grader is having a butterfly release ceremony at school. Following their progress from pillie to butterfly has been a fascinating experience for both the imp and me. In typical fashion, my son's pillie won the award for the most 'frass' in the class. You can guess what that is, can't you?

The famed caterpillar was named Leonardo DaVinci--Leo for short. And today Leo will set his wings in motion with 17 other butterflies, accompanied by much singing and dancing. Hooray!

Butterfly cupcakes were made in honor of the occasion. Hello Cupcake! by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson was my inspiration, although the cake and frosting were my own favorites. Yes, for once I used those disgusting-tasting candy melts--but the effect, my dears, is lovely! Can't wait for the party!!

P.S. The Butterfly Party was so exciting, and they all escaped without injury! Here's a photo of my proud little papa...
And I found the butterfly recipe online!

OMG - The Very Hungry Caterpillar! I LOVED that book as a kid! And the cupcakes, I must say, are adorable. Even with the addition of the dreaded candy melts :)
